The Healing Power of Music

Put on the garments of Praise
instead of the spirit of despair,
Instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
Psalm 61:3

I have loved you with an everlasting love;  I have drawn you with loving-kindness.  I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt, O Israel.  Again you will take up your tambourine and go out to dance with the joyful!
Jeremiah 31:4
If you have ever struggled with depression, reading a verse like Jeremiah 31:4 may seem like it was written for someone else, but certainly not you.  You may never be able to visualize a time when you would be able to once again dance with the joyful.

Did you know that music, specifically God-anointed music, is a very powerful tool for those who suffer with depression?  God created music; therefore, it should be used for His glory alone and not to glorify people.  Music is used for:
  • Praise and Worship
  • Teaching or instructing (especially children)
  • Protection from harm and evil
  • Times of battle
  • Healing
Music for Praise and Worship:
Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;  it is fitting for the upright to praise him.  Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.  Sing to him a new song; play skillfully and shout for joy.  For the Word of the Lord is right and true;
Psalm 33:1-4

Music for Teaching and instruction:

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:15-16
Music for Protection:

But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.  Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.  For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.
Psalm 5:1-12
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.  Psalm 32:7

Music for Times of Battle:
How long must I see the battle standard and hear the sound of the trumpet?
Jeremiah 4:21
During times of battle, the musicians lead the marching battalions with drums, trumpets and flutes. They would play upbeat music and that would give the warriors strength and hope. Strength and hope would rise as their spirits march in step with the music.  Then the soldiers would sing songs of victory even before the battle was fought.

The spiritual application here is that we are the soldiers, marching into battle against the enemy and his minions.  As we walk in step with the Spirit, strength and hope will rise within us as we sing songs of victory.
Sing, O daughter of Zion, shout aloud, O Israel! The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, he will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3: 14,17
Depression is a battle against the enemy.  When you especially feel defeated, turn on some music that assures you of your victory over the enemy.  One of my favorite songs for just such occasions is Garment of Praise from the Revival In Belfast album.

Music for Healing:

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.  He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.
Psalm 40:1-3
One of the most powerful examples of how music heals is the story of King Saul.
Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play.  Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.
I Samuel 16:23
Three things would happen to Saul when David played music for him:
1.  There was mental relief
2.  He felt better
3.  The evil spirit would leave him

I am always excited when I find another tool or weapon with strength against the powers of darkness.  Do you know why I think music is so powerful against the enemy?

The prophet Ezekiel gives us a glimpse of how Lucifer (now Satan) was created.  He was a beautiful angel - an anointed cherub, created with instruments as part of his being.  I have a suspicion that he may have been the director of praise and worship until iniquity was found in him and he was cast from heaven.
You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Ezekiel 28: 12-13
Interestingly, of the four musical instrument groups - strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion, this anointed cherub was given tabrets (strings), pipes (woodwinds) and possibly timbrels (percussion), but he was not given any horns or trumpets (brass).

There is no doubt that God has reserved the trumpet for himself alone.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians 4:16
In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:52

I hope you will not miss using music as a tool, ordained by God, to defeat the enemy and bring mental relief and healing to your soul and spirit.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance~
